Ukrainian citizens in Slovakia

Ukrainian citizens in Slovakia in practice

Many people from Ukraine live in Slovakia under temporary protection. It is a special status whose duration is set by the Council of the EU, and it gives, for example, access to the labour market without a work permit. Those who want to stay long term face the question of when and how to switch to regular residence that does not depend on the next extension.

We look at your situation and suggest the right type of residence: for employment, for business, for family reunification or, for highly qualified people, the EU Blue Card. We prepare the documents, help with apostilles and translations of Ukrainian papers and file the application on your behalf. We confirm the current status of temporary protection at the consultation. Consultations are held in Slovak, Czech and English.

What we help with

  • Assessing the switch from temporary protection to residence
  • Residence for employment, business or family reunification
  • The EU Blue Card for highly qualified people
  • Apostilles and official translations of Ukrainian documents
  • Setting up a sole trader business or a limited company
  • Appeals and court actions after a refusal

Worth knowing

Legal basis

Temporary protection is governed by Slovak Act No. 480/2002 on Asylum. Slovakia grants it under Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/382 and its extensions.

Work without a permit

A person with temporary protection may work without a work permit. The employer has a duty to notify the labour office.

Routes to regular residence

The options include temporary residence for employment, for business or for family reunification under Act No. 404/2011. Each has its own conditions and documents.

Common questions

  • Its duration is decided by the Council of the EU, which has extended it several times. We confirm the current position at the consultation so that you can plan under the rules in force.
  • Yes, you can register as a sole trader or set up a limited company. The business can later serve as the basis for temporary residence for business purposes.
  • A replacement is issued by the Embassy of Ukraine in Bratislava or the consular office in Prešov. We advise which document to use in the Slovak residence procedure in the meantime.
